Cedar Rapids Evacuation
Just a short little grouping of videos today.
I had to do some work down in one of the evacuation areas in Cedar Rapids. Just after I shot these scenes, they closed the bridges to get into downtown Cedar Rapids. It made for a hasty retreat south of the city.

I had to work downtown (the building with the Blue Strawberry Coffee shop in it). Installing, racking and loading some new servers, people were getting real nervous. There is talk that the data center might loose power and we’d have to move some critical servers to Cedar Falls…
Left at 3pm and traffic was just a nightmare.

We were bumbing about one of our rooms getting some water in it, but now, after seeing this, I don’t feel so bad

What’s the deal with the sandbags over all the storm sewers? Is that to keep water from going down the drain? Or from coming up the drain?
Did people put those there? Or the city / emergency somebody or others?

The sandbags are to keep the manhole covers on and to try and prevent the water from coming up. Not sure who put them there? I would suspect it was the public that did it under directions from emergency personnel.

The sandbags are creepy, the way they’re stacked in little circles round the drains at regular intervals. You know some bad shit is going to go down when there are that many sandbags deployed. Powerful combination of your driver’s-eye cellphone-camera view, your silence and the industrial sounds coming from your truck as it bumps along.
Apocalyptic.
I’m thinking of you.
