July 4th, 2008
It’s been a really hard year for Iowans.
Beatings from tornados and floods over the past few months have really taken their toll.
In Cedar Rapids, our Freedom Festival, where the majority of us go to watch fireworks and celebrate July 4th every year had to be cancelled this year.
CBS 2 News and the Kernels teamed up to celebrate the 4th of July and raise money for flood victims.

I really like the idea of sitting down and watching a great firework display. Don’t think I’ve ever done that. Come to think of it, I’ve never been to a baseball game either. Always wanted to. Better put them on my list of things to do before I die…

fire in the sky - a fitting celebration to an elemental year.
nice to hear the bangs and the cheering.
for some reason, in the last few years all public fireworks displays i’ve attended in the uk have been soundtracked by music so loud that you can’t hear the bangs or the cheers. except the really old displays way out in the countryside, where they still do it properly. evidently local authorities have decided en-masse that people don’t like bangs, and would find fireworks boring if not accompanied by top 10 hits. weird.

That was really neat! I love hearing the excitement in the kids voices around you. Thanks for sharing that, it made me feel like I was there with you all.

Thanks for sharing this video. I just couldn’t bring myself to go to Kirkwood or to the stadium, so it was nice to get a glimpse of what it was like.

Very nice celebration, it’s good to see people are having fun after, as you say, “beatings” from tornadoes.
